Extract Text from PDF — Free, No Upload

Pull the text out of a PDF and download it as .txt or copy it. Keeps reading order and paragraphs, tells you which pages are scans. Free, browser-only, no upload.

Reading order rebuilt from text positions · scanned pages flagged, not silently empty

Extract Text from PDF — Free, No Upload

Copying text straight out of a PDF viewer usually goes wrong: the columns interleave, the words run together, and every line break lands in the wrong place. That is because a PDF does not store paragraphs — it stores thousands of little text runs, each with a position on the page. This extractor rebuilds the reading order from those positions, so a two-column page comes out as two columns read in order rather than one scrambled block, and paragraph breaks land where the spacing says they should. Pick a page range, choose whether to keep the original line breaks or merge them into flowing paragraphs, then download a .txt or copy the lot. The PDF is parsed by pdfjs inside your browser, so a contract, a CV, or a medical letter never leaves your device.

Reading Order, Not Soup

Text runs are grouped into lines by their baseline and ordered by position, so columns stay separate and words keep their spaces.

Tells You About Scans

A scanned PDF has an empty text layer. Instead of returning nothing silently, this tool flags exactly which pages are images and explains why.

100% Browser-Only

No upload and no server copy. The PDF is parsed in the tab, which is what you want for a contract, a payslip, or a medical letter.

Free, No Signup

No account, no page cap, no watermark in the output. Download a .txt or copy everything to the clipboard.

!How It Works, Step by Step

1

Drop a PDF. It is parsed in your browser and its page count is shown — nothing is uploaded.

2

Optionally narrow to a page range: 1-5, a single page like 3, or a list like 1,3,5-7. Blank means every page.

3

Choose your formatting: keep the original line breaks, or merge lines into flowing paragraphs for pasting into a document.

4

Click Extract text. Each page is listed with its word count, or flagged as a scan or a blank page.

5

Download the .txt or copy everything to the clipboard.

Technical FAQ

How do I extract text from a PDF for free?
Drop the PDF into the tool, leave the page box blank to take the whole document, and click Extract text. Each page appears with its text and word count, and you can download the result as a .txt file or copy it all to the clipboard. No account and no upload are involved.
Why does copying from a PDF viewer produce scrambled text?
A PDF has no notion of paragraphs or even lines. It stores individual runs of glyphs, each positioned on the page, and the order they appear in the file is whatever order the generator happened to write them in — which on a two-column layout often means alternating between the columns. This tool ignores that order entirely. It first looks for bands of whitespace that run clear across the page and splits there, which separates a heading from the columns beneath it and one column from the next, then rebuilds lines inside each block from the position of every run. That is why a two-column page comes out as one column followed by the other rather than as alternating half-lines.
Can it get text out of a scanned PDF?
No, and it will tell you so. A scan is a picture of a document, and pictures contain no text for an extractor to find. Recovering those words needs OCR, which recognises letter shapes in the image — a fundamentally different technique that PDFGami does not do. The tool checks whether each page paints an image, so a scanned page is labelled "Scan — no text layer" rather than quietly coming back empty.
What is the difference between keeping line breaks and merging paragraphs?
Keeping line breaks reproduces the layout, with a newline wherever the page has one — good for poetry, code, tables, and anything where the line matters. Merging paragraphs joins the lines within a paragraph into one long line and separates paragraphs with a blank line — this is what you want before pasting into a word processor, because the text then rewraps to the new page width instead of breaking where the PDF did.
What does "rejoin hyphenated words" do?
Justified text often splits a word across a line break with a hyphen, so extraction gives you "compre-" and "hension" on separate lines. With the option on, a line ending in a hyphen followed by a lowercase letter is stitched back into one word. It is off by default because it would also merge genuine hyphens that happen to fall at a line end.
Is it safe to extract text from a confidential PDF online?
On PDFGami, yes, because the document is never sent anywhere. It is parsed with pdfjs inside your browser and the extracted text stays in the page until you download or copy it. Open your browser developer tools network tab and click Extract text — no request carries the file.
Does it work on very large PDFs?
There is no artificial page limit. Pages are processed one at a time, so memory stays flat rather than growing with the document, but a very large file still takes time to parse. If you only need part of it, a page range is much faster than extracting everything.
