How to Convert EPUB to PDF — Free, in Your Browser, With Nothing Uploaded

By AIC Innovation·Published ·7 min read

You have an e-book as an .epub file and need it as a PDF — to print it, to annotate it, to read it on a laptop with no e-book app, or to send it to someone who only opens PDFs. The conversion takes two minutes with PDFGami's EPUB to PDF converter, in your browser and without uploading the book. This guide explains the one thing that surprises people — why the pages come out different from your e-reader — and how to get the cleanest result.

Your book is laid out in your browser and never uploaded.

The EPUB is opened inside the browser tab on your own device, and the PDF is made by your browser's print engine. Links inside the book to outside images and fonts are removed, so opening it makes no network request at all. Check it yourself: open the developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and open a book.

Why an EPUB has no pages

An EPUB is a small website in a ZIP file: chapters written in HTML, a stylesheet, pictures, sometimes fonts, and a list saying which chapter comes next. There are no pages in it. Your e-reader makes pages on the fly, fitting the text to its screen and your chosen font size — which is why the same book has 300 pages on a phone and 180 on a tablet.

A PDF is the opposite: every page is fixed. So converting EPUB to PDF always means laying the book out again onto pages of a chosen size. The words, styles and pictures stay the same; where the pages break is new. Any tool that claims to keep “the original pages” of a reflowable EPUB is describing something that does not exist. Fixed-layout EPUBs — picture books, comics, some textbooks — are the exception: they do have pages, and the converter keeps one per sheet.

Convert EPUB to PDF in four steps

  1. Open the EPUB to PDF converter in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
  2. Drop the .epub file onto it. The whole book appears in the preview.
  3. Choose a page size, and whether to start with the cover and a contents page — its entries are links in the PDF.
  4. Click Save as PDF. In the print dialog, pick Save as PDF as the printer, open More settings, untick Headers and footers, and save.

Which page size to choose

  • Book (A5) — paperback-sized pages. The best choice for reading the PDF on a tablet or laptop: lines stay a comfortable length and the page looks like a book.
  • A4 or US Letter — for printing on ordinary paper, or when the PDF goes to someone who will print it. Fewer pages, longer lines.

The preview changes as you switch, so compare before you save.

What carries over, and what does not

  • Carried over:the text, headings, emphasis, the book's own fonts (including obfuscated embedded fonts, which are a standard part of EPUB and not copy protection), pictures, tables, footnote links and links between chapters.
  • Laid out fresh: page breaks, as explained above. Each chapter starts on a new page.
  • Left out: anything that would load from the internet (rare in EPUBs), and interactive features such as embedded audio, video or scripts, which a PDF cannot hold.

Books from Kindle, Kobo and other stores

Most e-books sold by big stores carry DRM — copy protection that encrypts the chapters so they open only in the store's own apps. Kindle books also use Amazon's own formats rather than EPUB. The converter recognises DRM-protected files and tells you so; it does not remove DRM, and this guide does not explain how to.

Plenty of EPUBs are DRM-free and convert normally: public-domain books from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks, many independent publishers and authors who sell without DRM, and books you have exported yourself. Some stores label DRM-free titles on the product page.

Other ways: Calibre and reader apps

  • Calibre — a free, open-source desktop e-book manager for Windows, Mac and Linux. It converts in bulk and offers many layout settings. Worth installing if you convert books often.
  • Reading without converting — if you only want to read the book, the preview on the converter page is itself a reader, and nothing needs installing.

Why not to upload a book

What you read is personal, and many EPUBs are not books at all but reports, manuscripts and course packs. Most online converters upload the file to their server to convert it. PDFGami does not: the work happens in your browser, and you can check that — the safety checklist shows how to test any tool in a minute.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an EPUB to PDF for free?

Open PDFGami’s EPUB to PDF converter, drop the .epub file onto it, pick a page size and click Save as PDF. Your browser’s print dialog opens; choose Save as PDF as the printer. The book is laid out in your browser and never uploaded, and there is no account or limit.

Why do the page breaks differ from my e-reader?

Because an EPUB has no fixed pages. Its text reflows to fit each screen and font size, so your e-reader’s pages exist only on your e-reader. A PDF needs real pages, so the book is laid out again for the page size you choose. Every EPUB-to-PDF converter does this; the difference is only in how well it keeps the book’s styles.

Can I convert a Kindle book to PDF?

Books bought on Kindle are in Amazon’s own formats and protected with DRM, so they can only be read in Kindle apps; no honest converter turns them into a PDF, and PDFGami does not try. The same goes for DRM-protected EPUBs from other stores. DRM-free EPUBs — from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, many publishers and authors — convert normally.

Will the PDF have selectable text?

Yes. The PDF is made by the browser’s print engine from the book’s real text, so you can select, copy and search it. Converters that render each page as an image produce PDFs you cannot search; this one does not.

How do I remove the date and URL printed on every page?

Those come from the browser’s print dialog. Open More settings and untick Headers and footers before you save. Margins are already set for the page size you chose on the converter.

Is it safe to convert an e-book online?

It is when nothing is uploaded. PDFGami opens the EPUB inside your browser tab and also strips links to outside images and fonts from it, so opening a book makes no network request at all — you can confirm that in the Network tab of your browser’s developer tools.
