Why convert M4A to WAV
M4A is how Apple stores AAC audio — iPhone voice memos, GarageBand exports, Apple Music downloads. It is compact because it is compressed. WAV is the opposite: plain, uncompressed samples that every audio editor, DAW, transcription service and CD-burning tool accepts without asking which codec you used.
So M4A to WAV is usually a hand-off: the next program wants WAV, or it handles WAV more reliably than AAC.
What to expect: size and quality
WAV is big. CD-quality stereo (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) is about 10 MB a minute; a mono voice memo at 48 kHz is about 5.5 MB a minute — roughly ten times the M4A.
The WAV keeps every sample of the decoded M4A, so nothing more is lost in the conversion. It cannot add back what AAC compression removed when the M4A was made; if you need a smaller lossless file, FLAC holds exactly the same audio at about half the size.
iPhone voice memos
Voice memos are M4A. Share them from the Voice Memos app to Files or to your computer, then drop them here. Many transcription and editing services ask for WAV, and a mono memo stays mono, so the file is no bigger than it needs to be.
Step by step
- Drop your M4A files — one or many.
- WAV is already selected as the output.
- Click Convert to WAV. Several files come back as one ZIP.
- Nothing is uploaded at any point.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert M4A to WAV for free?
Drop the M4A files onto this page and click Convert to WAV. The conversion runs in your browser — no upload, no account, no watermark — and several files download together as a ZIP.
Is M4A to WAV lossless?
From the M4A, yes: the WAV holds every sample the M4A decodes to. It cannot restore detail the original AAC compression discarded, so it will not sound better than the M4A — only be easier for other software to use.
Why is the WAV so much bigger?
WAV is uncompressed: about 10 MB a minute for stereo CD quality, against roughly 1 MB a minute for a typical M4A. Choose FLAC instead if you want the same lossless audio at about half the WAV size.
Can I convert iPhone voice memos to WAV?
Yes. Voice memos are M4A files. Share them out of the Voice Memos app, drop them here, and they come back as WAV, still mono.
Are my recordings uploaded?
No. Decoding and conversion happen inside your browser tab; the files never leave your device.
