How do I remove a white background from a logo?

Set the tolerance to about 20-30, click anywhere on the white with the magic wand, then untick "Contiguous only" so white trapped inside enclosed letter shapes — the middle of an O or an A — is cleared as well. Enable "Trim transparent edges" before downloading so the PNG is cropped tightly around the mark.

Why is there still a white outline around my subject?

That is JPEG compression. The encoder blends the boundary between subject and background into a band of near-white pixels that are not quite pure white, so a low tolerance leaves them behind. Undo, raise the tolerance to roughly 35-50, and click again. If the halo persists on a few spots, clear them with the erase brush at a small size.

The wand erased my subject too. What went wrong?

The tolerance was high enough that the tool considered part of your subject the same colour as the background — common when the subject itself contains white or very light greys. Press Ctrl+Z, lower the tolerance, and click again. For a white subject on a white background, use the box selector to isolate the subject first, then clean up with the erase brush.

Should I use contiguous or non-contiguous mode?

Contiguous erases only the connected region you clicked, which is safer and the right default. Non-contiguous erases every pixel of that colour anywhere in the image, which is what you want for white inside enclosed shapes — but it will also remove white areas that are part of your subject, so check the result before saving.

Can I remove a white background from a scanned document or signature?

Yes, and it is one of the best cases for this tool. Scans are high contrast, so a tolerance around 30-40 clears the paper while leaving the ink. A transparent signature can then be placed over a PDF or a contract without a white box around it.

Does the exported PNG really have transparency?
